Sultanate: Sokoto Government Debunks MURIC’s Accusations, Calls for Apolitical Stance
The Sokoto State Government has refuted allegations made by the Muslims Rights Concern (MURIC) that it plans to dethrone the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar. The government described the accusations as “untrue, baseless, biased, and unfounded”.
In a statement released by the Press Secretary to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, the government expressed surprise that a responsible body like MURIC would join forces with “deluded mischief makers and enemies of progress” to fabricate such a false story.

The government assured MURIC that it holds the Sultanate Council in high regard and esteem, and that the relationship between the state government and the Sultanate Council remains cordial. The government also highlighted its commitment to Islamic affairs, citing the second item on the Ahmed Aliyu’s nine-point Smart Agenda, which focuses on promoting Islamic affairs.
The government explained that the recent transfer and sacking of some District Heads in Sokoto State were due to their involvement in unbecoming behaviors such as land racketeering, aiding insecurity, and insubordination. The government acted in conformity with the recommendations made by a whitepaper committee, which investigated the allegations and advised the government on the necessary actions.
The government urged MURIC to remain apolitical and not to be swayed by the antics of enemies of progress. It also reminded MURIC that no administration in the history of Sokoto State has done more for Islam than the present administration.
