Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman

Crown Prince MBS: Conquering Controversy with Diplomacy and Humility By Zekeri Idakwo

Unlike his predecessors who remained largely conservative, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has demonstrated exceptional leadership and deserves commendation for his ability to adapt to the evolving global reality.

However, like any individual, he is not without his flaws. One of his significant challenges has been navigating international controversies, which he has addressed with a remarkable display of humility and sophistication.

In the face of intense public outcry and international pressure, Crown Prince Salman has demonstrated unprecedented maturity and diplomacy in handling the allegations surrounding the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. Despite the Kingdom’s initial position on the matter, the Crown Prince has taken a crucial step forward by acknowledging the heinous crime and vowing to seek full justice and accountability.

During a very crucial interview with Asharq al-Awsat, the Crown Prince described the murder as a “very painful crime” and emphasised that those accused of carrying it out are government officials. This admission marks a significant shift in the kingdom’s stance, showcasing the Crown Prince’s willingness to confront the truth and take responsibility.

The Crown Prince’s response has not only helped to ease tension with the international community but has also enhanced the kingdom’s relationships with the rest of the world. His commitment to achieving full justice and accountability has sent a strong message that the Kingdom is dedicated to upholding the rule of law and promoting transparency.

In November 2022, President Joe Biden’s administration issued a legal opinion stating that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is entitled to immunity regarding his alleged involvement in Jamal Khashoggi’s assassination.

This perspective was in response to a lawsuit filed against the prince, which was subsequently dismissed by the judge based on the administration’s stance. Although, some have criticised the US government’s handling of the situation, the prince’s response has been deliberate and thoughtful, showcasing leadership that has been largely absent from the discourse.

Moreover, the Crown Prince’s handling of the crisis has also boosted the kingdom’s Vision 2030 agenda, which aims to diversify the economy, promote social reforms, and strengthen international partnerships. By demonstrating his commitment to accountability and justice, the Crown Prince has reinforced the Kingdom’s credibility and attractiveness to foreign investors and partners.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s mature and diplomatic handling of the Khashoggi crisis has not only mitigated the damage to the kingdom’s reputation but has also strengthened its relationships with the international community and reinforced its commitment to Vision 2030.

As Saudi Arabia continues to navigate the complexities of the modern world, the Crown Prince’s leadership and vision will play a vital role in shaping the Kingdom’s future and promoting peace and prosperity in the region.
