PRNigeria Fellowship: Empowering Future Leaders
The PRNigeria Young Communications Fellowship is proving to be a game-changing mentorship initiative for journalism and public relations in Nigeria. Carefully designed and incubated by PRNigeria, the program trained 30 promising young graduates in 2024. These aspiring PR managers and journalists received intensive training on the best skills, tools, and knowledge needed to excel in their fields. Spread across three centers in Kano, Ilorin, and Abuja, the fellowship’s inaugural cohort represents a bold step toward equipping young professionals to navigate the challenges of today’s media landscape.
Motunrayo Alaka, the Executive Director and CEO of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), described the fellowship as “impactful.” She praised PRNigeria‘s selfless commitment to bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, a sentiment echoed by many of the fellows.
If one word could sum up the experience of the fellowship, it would be “impactful.” For many fellows, the program provided clarity and direction in a rapidly changing professional environment. The Nigeria of the 1970s and 1980s—where young people graduated, got jobs, and settled into stable careers—stands in stark contrast to today’s reality. Now, graduates face numerous hurdles even after completing their education. This fellowship targeted fresh graduates with a passion for writing and journalism, offering them training in critical 21st-century skills like artificial intelligence, writing, social media management, media production, public speaking, and public engagement.
These are not just survival skills but tools for thriving in the modern workplace. The fellowship equips graduates not only to pursue journalism and PR but also to excel in any professional environment that demands communication, creativity, and adaptability.
The 30 fellows who completed the program represent a generation poised to reshape journalism and PR—not just in Nigeria, but globally. This bold vision was made possible by the selfless and visionary leadership of Alhaji Yusha’u Shuaib and his vibrant team. Facilitating such an enriching, countrywide experience at no cost is a testament to their dedication to empowering young Nigerians.
Early Signs of Success

The fellowship is already bearing fruit. Umar Faruk, a fellow from the Abuja center, won the “Best Features Writer” award at the 7th edition of the Campus Journalism Awards. During the closing ceremony in Kano, the Kano State Government expressed interest in collaborating with some of the fellows. Moreover, many fellows have shown renewed zeal in their craft, publishing insightful and engaging articles in reputable newspapers and magazines across the nation. These early successes demonstrate the fellows’ potential to become key players in Nigeria’s journalism and PR industries.
A Personal Transformation
For me, the PRNigeria Fellowship has been a defining experience. It shaped my 2024 and gave clarity to my aspirations. It not only revealed what a career in PR and journalism could look like but also provided me with the tools and direction to pursue it.
The journey didn’t end with the training sessions. PRNigeria, through Image Merchants Promotions Limited (IMPR), continues to engage fellows, encouraging us to write and publish articles on their platforms. This post-training support is invaluable, offering a platform to showcase our skills while honing them further. By tracking the progress of the fellows and providing assistance where necessary, the program ensures that the seeds planted during the fellowship grow into flourishing careers.
A Vision for the Future
This fellowship is not just a program for today; it is an investment in the future. While we hope and pray for its sustainability, it is equally important to work hard to ensure its continuity. If 30 fellows can make waves in just one year, imagine the impact 300 fellows, equipped with the same skills and values, could have in a decade.
The PRNigeria Young Communications Fellowship is more than a training program; it is a movement. It is creating a generation of journalists and PR professionals committed to excellence, integrity, and innovation. With initiatives like this, the future of journalism and public relations in Nigeria is bright.
To aspiring communicators, this fellowship is a beacon of hope and an unparalleled opportunity. For those of us who have experienced it, the journey is just beginning. Together, we will build a future where the power of communication drives meaningful change, not just in Nigeria but across the globe.
A Fellowship for the Future, indeed.
