Buhari Laid to Rest in Daura as Tinubu, Shettima, World Leaders Pay Final Respects

Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday evening in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, amidst a solemn outpouring of grief and tributes from Nigerian and international dignitaries.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led a high-powered delegation, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, to pay final respects to the late statesman. Also in attendance were President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, Prime Minister of Niger Republic Ali Lamine Zeine, former President of Niger Issoufou Mahamadou, Nigeria’s former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, several state governors, and prominent business leaders.

The late President’s remains arrived from London on Tuesday afternoon via the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, where they were received by government officials and security operatives before being transported in a motorcade to Daura.

Upon arrival in Daura, a brief lying-in-state ceremony was held at the late President’s residence, allowing close family members and dignitaries a moment of reflection. This was followed by the funeral prayer (Salatul Janazah), led by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, the Imam of the Central Mosque in Daura.

The final interment took place at 5:50 p.m. at President Buhari’s private residence, with President Tinubu, close family members, and top officials present to witness the burial rites. The ceremony was marked by full military honours, including a reveille and a 21-gun salute, signifying the nation’s respect for one of its most prominent leaders.

Thousands of residents lined the streets of Daura to pay their last respects, while a weeklong programme of condolence visits and tributes has been scheduled to continue in the days ahead, beginning with a visit by the Presidential Committee to the late President’s family.

President Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, leaves behind a legacy that has stirred diverse reflections across the country and beyond.
