Army Chief Tasks RSMs on Discipline, Combat Efficiency
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged Regimental Sergeant Majors of the Nigerian Army to reinforce discipline, professionalism and combat readiness as part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness across various theatres of operation.
Shaibu gave the charge on Thursday during the closing ceremony of the First Regimental Sergeant Majors’ Convention 2026 held at the JN Garba Hall, Postgraduate School, Old Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
The convention, themed “Empowering Regimental Sergeant Majors to Drive Combat Readiness and Professional Excellence,” brought together senior non-commissioned officers for strategic discussions on leadership, mentorship, regimentation and operational efficiency within the Nigerian Army.
Addressing participants, the Army Chief described RSMs as critical custodians of discipline, military tradition and regimental values, stressing that their influence remains essential in maintaining troop morale, cohesion and operational effectiveness.
He urged the senior soldiers to deepen the warrior ethos among troops in order to build resilient and mission-oriented forces capable of confronting evolving security threats across the country.

Shaibu also cautioned against the misuse of social media and digital platforms, warning that careless online engagements could compromise operational security and undermine military operations.
He therefore directed RSMs to enforce responsible digital conduct and ensure strict adherence to communication protocols within their units and formations.
“RSMs must lead from the front by strengthening discipline, mentorship and professionalism among younger soldiers,” he said.
The COAS further emphasised the importance of mentorship in preserving regimental values, ethical conduct and combat effectiveness within the force.
Earlier, the Chief of Administration (Army), Major General Isa Abdullahi, said the convention reflected the Nigerian Army’s commitment to improving administrative efficiency and operational readiness in line with the command philosophy of the COAS.
He urged participants to apply the lessons and strategic insights gained from the convention toward improving troop welfare, discipline and operational performance across formations nationwide.
The event formed part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army leadership to strengthen institutional capacity and sustain professionalism amid the country’s evolving security challenges.
