Oil Thieves Flee as Navy Troops Seize 1,800 Litres of AGO in Lekki
Operatives of the Nigerian Navy have confiscated about 1,800 litres of suspected illegally acquired Automotive Gas Oil in an intelligence-led operation in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.
The operation, carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base, Lekki, targeted suspected oil thieves and illegal petroleum product dealers operating around the Mobido Axis of Ibeju-Lekki.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Naval Information, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the raid followed credible human intelligence received on the activities of economic saboteurs within the area.
The Navy said the patrol team swiftly mobilised to the suspected storage location at about 10:30 p.m. on May 6, 2026.
“On sighting naval personnel, the perpetrators fled the scene, abandoning the products,” the statement said.

A search of the area led to the discovery of 10 containers of 30 litres each and five drums containing products suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil, estimated at about 1,800 litres.
The confiscated products were subsequently evacuated to the Forward Operating Base, Lekki, for further handling in line with operational procedures.
The Navy said the operation, which ended in the early hours of May 7, underscores its continued determination to combat illegal petroleum activities and deny economic saboteurs freedom of operation within Nigeria’s maritime environment.
It warned that ongoing intelligence-driven operations would continue across the nation’s coastal communities and waterways to dismantle illegal fuel networks and protect critical economic assets.
“The Nigerian Navy reiterates that there will be no hiding place for economic saboteurs,” the statement added.
