Defence Minister Commends ICRC for Humanitarian Support in North-East
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has commended the International Committee of the Red Cross for its humanitarian interventions in conflict-affected communities, particularly in North-East Nigeria.
Musa gave the commendation while receiving a delegation of the ICRC led by its Head of Delegation, Doris El Doueihy, at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja.
The minister said the Federal Government remains committed to promoting human rights and adhering to international best practices in civil-military relations.
He noted that insecurity in parts of the North-East and North-West continues to pose serious challenges, stressing that the fight against insurgency requires collective national support.
“Security is everybody’s business and all stakeholders must unite against terrorism and other forms of criminality,” he said.

Musa also acknowledged the ICRC’s continued humanitarian support to victims of conflict and displaced communities across the country.
Earlier, El Doueihy expressed appreciation for the sustained collaboration between the ICRC and the Nigerian military, describing the relationship as critical to delivering humanitarian assistance in conflict-affected areas.
She also commended the Federal Government for the recent launch of a new training programme for military police in Zaria.
According to her, the ICRC has expanded its humanitarian operations in the North-East and North-West, with increased presence in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
The ICRC official, however, raised concerns over prolonged detention without family contact, urging authorities to allow Red Cross officials access to detainees to facilitate communication with their relatives.
She further acknowledged ongoing efforts to improve detainee hearing processes and called for stronger coordination with the Ministry of Justice to address overcrowding in detention facilities.
