
CNS Backs Hydrographic Capacity Development for Nigeria’s Blue Economy
The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to supporting hydrographic capacity development as part of efforts to strengthen safe navigation, maritime governance, and the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy.
The Naval Chief gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the Hydrographer of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydrographic Agency, Rear Admiral Olumide Fadahunsi, to Naval Headquarters in Abuja.Vice Admiral Idi Abbas,
During the visit, Rear Admiral Fadahunsi appreciated the Chief of the Naval Staff for the continued support extended to the National Hydrographic Agency and outlined his strategic vision for the Agency.
He explained that upon assumption of office, he reviewed the Agency’s operational activities and developed a strategic plan focused on manpower development as a critical driver for the safety of navigation and the advancement of Nigeria’s blue economy.

The Hydrographer of the Federation noted that personnel of the Nigerian Navy constitute a significant percentage of the Agency’s workforce, reflecting the strong institutional ties between both organisations.
He also disclosed plans to increase female participation in hydrography in line with the objectives of the International Hydrographic Organisation aimed at encouraging broader inclusion of women within the profession.
In his remarks, Vice Admiral Abbas congratulated Rear Admiral Fadahunsi on his appointment and expressed satisfaction with the strategic direction already introduced at the Agency.
The CNS urged him to sustain and build upon the achievements of his predecessor while assuring him of continued support in the areas of manpower assistance and capacity development.
According to the Naval Chief, a professionally trained hydrographic workforce remains central to the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Navy and the country’s maritime development goals.
Vice Admiral Abbas also commended the National Hydrographic Agency for its hydrographic operations in Cross River and Imo States, describing the achievements as widely recognised and commendable.
He further encouraged the Agency to strengthen local capacity development through the production of training charts for the Nigerian Defence Academy Naval Wing and Nigerian Navy Training Schools.
