Ten governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State have jointly petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging his intervention in what they described as a worsening crisis within the party and warning that the APC’s electoral prospects in the state could be jeopardised if urgent steps are not taken.
In a letter dated June 19, 2026, addressed to the President and Commander-in-Chief, the aspirants congratulated Tinubu on the third anniversary of his administration and reaffirmed their loyalty to his leadership, pledging support for his re-election bid in 2027.
The signatories to the letter are Dr. Oluwatoyin Tajudeen Alabi, Captain Ahmad Mahmud, Alhaji Tajudeen Audu, Dr. Azeez Salako Muideen Olaniyi, Ambassador Yahaya Seriki Gambari, Senator Saliu Mustapha, Dr. Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa, Hon. Omar Muhammed Bio, Barrister Dele Belgore (SAN), and Senator Dr. Yahaya Ibrahim Oloriegbe.
While commending President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the aspirants expressed concern over what they termed the declining fortunes of the APC in Kwara State, alleging that the coalition that produced the party’s historic victory in 2019 had been weakened by exclusionary politics and the marginalisation of key stakeholders.
They recalled the 2019 “Otoge” political movement, which ended decades of political dominance in the state and paved the way for the APC’s emergence as the ruling party. According to them, the victory was achieved through the collective efforts of diverse political tendencies, community leaders, party loyalists, and progressive forces united by a common objective.
The aspirants, however, argued that the gains of that struggle had not been adequately consolidated, alleging that several party leaders and stakeholders who contributed significantly to the APC’s success had since been alienated from both government and party affairs.
In the letter, they contended that the resulting disaffection had weakened the party’s political structure and created opportunities for opposition forces to regain ground in the state. They further claimed that concerns were growing among party members regarding the APC’s chances in future elections if the current situation remained unaddressed.
The group specifically called on President Tinubu to critically review recent developments within the party in Kwara State, including issues surrounding the conduct of party primaries and the announcement of results. They urged the President to intervene in the interest of preserving the party’s unity and electoral strength.
They also appealed to the President to carefully assess the records, loyalty, capacity, and statewide acceptability of the governorship aspirants with a view to supporting a candidate capable of rebuilding party cohesion, restoring stakeholder confidence, and strengthening the APC’s support base ahead of the 2027 elections.
The aspirants pledged that should the President support a consensus candidate, they would collectively rally behind such a choice and mobilise their structures and resources to ensure victory for all APC candidates in the state.
They further advocated deliberate measures to ensure that candidates for other elective positions, including the National and State Assemblies, reflect the diverse political interests and realities within Kwara State.
Warning of possible consequences if the current trajectory continues, the aspirants said the APC’s electoral prospects in Kwara could be severely threatened, adding that some stakeholders might be compelled to seek alternative political platforms to pursue their ambitions in 2027.
The letter concluded with an appeal for the President’s timely and decisive intervention to safeguard the APC’s structure in the state and preserve its chances of victory in the forthcoming elections. The aspirants expressed confidence in Tinubu’s commitment to justice, fairness, and democratic values within the ruling party.
