NADCEL 2026: Tinubu Pledges AI, Indigenous Defence Production to Boost Army Operations
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Army through the adoption of artificial intelligence, indigenous defence production and modern military technologies to address evolving security threats.
The President made the pledge on Monday during the grand finale of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration held at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu described the Nigerian Army as a formidable force whose legacy of courage, professionalism and resilience continues to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty while contributing to regional and global peace.
He said the Army has distinguished itself through decades of operational excellence, from defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity to leading regional interventions and participating in United Nations peace support operations, thereby strengthening peace and stability across Africa and beyond.
Tinubu pledged sustained government support for the Army’s ongoing modernisation programme through enhanced troop welfare, acquisition of advanced operational capabilities, and increased investment in indigenous defence manufacturing and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.

The President also commended the successful hosting of the African Land Forces Forum, describing it as a strategic platform that promotes military diplomacy, innovation and stronger international defence cooperation in addressing contemporary security challenges.
Reflecting on the theme of NADCEL 2026, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” Tinubu said it underscores the enduring relationship between the Nigerian Army and the citizens it serves. He paid tribute to fallen heroes for their sacrifices in preserving Nigeria’s unity and assured that their families would continue to receive government support.
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the Nigerian Army remains committed to adapting to emerging security threats through professionalism, resilience and continuous force modernisation.
According to him, the Army will sustain investments in modern equipment, infrastructure, advanced operational platforms and personnel development in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda, while strengthening collaboration with government institutions, international partners and citizens to enhance national security.
The ceremony featured colourful military parades, tactical demonstrations, equipment displays, presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Awards to outstanding personnel, and a Research and Development Exhibition showcasing the Nigerian Army’s growing achievements in indigenous innovation and defence technology.
The event attracted former Heads of State, including Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo, Chiefs of Army from 17 African countries, senior military officers, members of the National and State Assemblies, and other distinguished guests.
