NotTooYoungToRun Town Hall meeting and ReadyToRun

In July 2017, the National Assembly in a historic vote passed the Reduction of Age bill popularly known as the Not Too Young To Run bill to reduce the age for running for office in Nigeria.

Having been approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives in fulfilment of the constitution amendment procedure, the #NotTooYoungRun Bill boosted Nigeria’s image at the international level with the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) subsequently adopting the #NotTooYoungToRun campaign. Consequently, Nigeria is being accorded due recognition by these international bodies in all its engagement on youth rights as human rights proceeding from the global adoption.

Following the transmission of the NotTooYoungToRun bill to the 36 states House of Assemblies along with other bills for approval in line with the constitutional amendment procedure, a minimum of 24 states must approve it.

As part of the advocacy efforts of our Movement, 991 personalized letters have been sent to the legislators in the 36 state Houses of Assembly in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the Not Too Young To Run movement will be hosting a Citizens Town Hall on Constitution Review on December 11, 2017 at Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja from 1pm to 4pm. The town hall is convened to provide a platform for interface between high-level policy makers and citizens on the ongoing constitution review process. At the town hall meeting citizens will engage Speakers of State Assemblies on pathways for ensuring the outcome of the constitution review meets the aspiration of the people.

The Not Too Young To Run Movement will proceed with the next stage in towards increasing and promoting youth participation with the launch of the Ready To Run platform which will serve as a database and resource centre for young people who are ready to run for elected offices in Nigeria.

We call on all citizens to contact their state lawmakers through phone calls, text messages, letters, visits and social media to vote YES to the age reduction bill.
