No minor offenders in Kano custodial facilities – Correctional Service clarifies
The Nigerian Correctional Service Kano Command has issued a strong rebuttal to recent media reports claiming that a minor is currently held in one of its facilities.
In a statement by the state command Public Relations Officer, Musbahu Lawan K/Nassarawa, released on Monday, the Command categorically denies the presence of any juvenile offenders in its custodial centers.
Conventional custodial centres in Nigeria are exclusively designated for inmates aged 18 years and above.
According to the statement, “The inmate mentioned in the misleading report has been confirmed to be 19 years and 2 months old.
“He was remanded in the custodial center for the offense of armed robbery by the Chief Magistrate Court (CMC) Gyadi-Gyadi Kano on January 26, 2023, when he was 18 years and 6 months old. The Command emphasizes that it adheres strictly to age guidelines and does not admit minors into its facilities.

“In cases involving minors, the Nigerian Correctional Service refers them to either the Bostal Training Institute or the Remand Home Goron Dutse, both located in Kano.
“These specialized institutions focus on reform, rehabilitation, and reintegration, aiming to transform young offenders into productive and responsible citizens upon release,” the statement added.
The Command urges reporters and media personnel to verify and confirm information before publishing sensitive reports.
SC Musbahu Lawan K/Nassarawa also advised the general public to disregard the recent report, which the Command dismisses as a figment of the reporter’s imagination.
“As custodians of justice, the Nigerian Correctional Service remains committed to its duty, ensuring that justice prevails while safeguarding the rights and welfare of all citizens.
“We are therefore calling on the general public to support the Command as we work towards protecting them and making the society safer,” K/Nassarawa added.
