Muslim Groups Urge Labour Unions to Spare Airports, Avoid Disrupting Hajj Airlift

As the nationwide strike by Nigerian labour unions continues, Muslim groups have expressed concern over the potential disruption of the Hajj airlift at major airports. The United Muslims Voices (UMV), a coalition of concerned organisations, has appealed to the Nigerian Labour Union (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider their stance on airport closures, citing the sensitive nature of the ongoing Hajj operations.

In a statement released to PRNigeria, the UMV described the suspension of work at airports as “insensitive and ill-timed,” and emphasized the need to respect Muslims’ religious rights and ensure the safety and well-being of Hajj pilgrims. The group noted that thousands of Nigerian Muslims have planned and prepared for the Hajj, and any disruption could jeopardize their dreams and aspirations.

The UMV acknowledged the time-sensitive nature of Hajj flights and appealed to all parties involved to prioritize the welfare of Muslim pilgrims and work together to ensure the seamless continuation of Hajj operations. The group praised the Nigerian Hajj Commission (NAHCON) for its exceptional dedication to facilitating timely transportation, with a significant percentage of pilgrims already airlifted for the Hajj.

The Muslim groups urged authorities to find a balanced approach that respects religious rights and the nation’s broader interests, ensuring the uninterrupted airlifting of pilgrims to fulfill their religious obligations.
