Senate Intervenes in Police Force, Service Commission Controversy

The Senate Committee on Police Affairs has stepped into the ongoing controversy between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Police Service Commission (PSC) over the recruitment of 10,000 constables. Chairman of the Committee, Senator Abdulamid Ahmed Mallamadori, has invited both sides to a meeting to resolve the issue.

In a statement, Mallamadori expressed concern that the controversy could damage the reputation of the NPF and hinder its ability to effectively address the current security challenges facing the country. He urged both parties to cease making claims and counterclaims in the media and instead work towards a resolution that prioritizes the nation’s interest.

The controversy began when the NPF and PSC publicly disagreed over the recent recruitment exercise, with each side accusing the other of irregularities. The recruitment of 10,000 constables has been an annual exercise since 2019, as part of the Federal Government’s policy to strengthen policing in Nigeria.

Mallamadori emphasized the need for stakeholders to put aside their differences and work together to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians. He noted that the current security situation in the country requires cooperation and unity among all security agencies, rather than controversy and infighting.

The Senate Committee’s intervention aims to resolve the dispute and prevent further damage to the reputation of the NPF. The meeting is expected to take place as soon as practicable, and both sides have been urged to come prepared to find a mutually beneficial solution.”
