FG to Toll Abuja-Kaduna Road After Completion in 2026

The federal government has announced plans to commence tolling operations on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway after its full completion in 2026.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during an inspection tour of the highway.

Umahi emphasized that only roads that have been 100% completed will be tolled, assuring Nigerians that the government remains committed to delivering durable road infrastructure.

He further revealed that the private sector will play a role in the maintenance of the road, especially in sections that are already showing signs of wear.

According to the Minister, construction work on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway is expected to last 14 months, starting from February 1, 2025.

Based on this timeline, the project is projected to be completed by April 2026, after which tolling operations will commence.

“The Federal Executive Council on Monday this week graciously awarded the construction of sections 1 and 3 of the road to Infoquest Nigeria Limited, and they have commenced work,” Umahi said.

“We are not here essentially to check the volume of work done, but to agree on the level of mobilization.”

He also disclosed that his ministry is working to address failed sections of the highway, particularly 38 kilometers of Section 1, which stretches from Abuja to Kaduna.

“We noticed a lot of depression beyond the field shoulders, so the Permanent Secretary has been directed to engage separate consultants. A team comprising the contractor, the consultant, and the Ministry of Works will assess the entire stretch of the 38-kilometer section and recommend the best solution,” he stated.

Additionally, the Minister inspected the Lambata Bridge on the Abuja-Minna Road, where he highlighted efforts to curb illegal sand mining and protect the infrastructure from erosion.

“We have provided a solution to protect the pike caps against illegal sand mining and erosion, and I am confident that this solution will be adequate,” Umahi assured.

The inspection tour was attended by the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, the Permanent Secretary, and other senior officials from the ministry.
