Boko Haram Attacks Military Bases in Borno, Kills 2 Soldiers in Landmine Explosion

Boko Haram terrorists launched coordinated attacks on two military formations in Borno State, targeting the Wajirko army base in Damboa Local Government Area and another formation in Wulgo village of Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area.

According to sources, the insurgents ambushed the army positions on Monday, leading to intense confrontations that forced troop dislodgement. Unconfirmed reports suggest that some terrorists were killed in the encounter. The Wulgo formation consists of a joint force of Nigerian and Cameroonian troops, given the area’s proximity to the international border with Cameroon.

In a separate incident, at least two soldiers were reportedly killed, and several others, including the newly deployed Brigade Commander of ‘Operation Hadin Kai,’ sustained injuries when their convoy struck landmines planted by suspected terrorists along the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu road.

The attack comes amid plans by the Borno State government and security agencies to reopen the 185km Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu road, which has remained closed for years due to persistent insurgent activities.

Reacting to the renewed attacks, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) condemned the escalating violence, calling on the federal government to deploy advanced technological warfare, including drones, to tackle insurgency. He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to “Train, Equip, Arm, and Motivate (TEAM) the military and security agencies” to effectively combat terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings in the North-East and across the country.

Ndume also expressed concern over rising abductions along major highways, including the kidnapping of Professor Abubakar El-Jummah, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB), who remains in Boko Haram captivity.

Efforts to obtain confirmation from security officials, including Police Public Relations Officer ASP Kenneth Daso, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
