Borno Deepens Counter-terrorism Efforts, Bans Fuel Sales in Bama

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced an immediate ban on the sale of petrol in Bama Local Government Area, including Bama town and the border community of Banki.

The ban, which followed extensive consultations with security agencies, is part of the state government’s intensified strategy to combat terrorism and disrupt the supply chains aiding insurgent groups operating in the region.

Bama, located in the northeastern part of Borno State, shares borders with Cameroon and the Republic of Chad—areas often exploited by armed groups for smuggling and logistics.

In a statement released on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Dauda Iliya, Governor Zulum said the new directive is aimed at strengthening counter-insurgency operations and cutting off resources that fuel terrorist activities.

“I have directed the immediate suspension of petrol sales in Bama town, Banki, and other parts of Bama Local Government Area. This decision was taken in the interest of security and public safety,” the governor declared.

He warned that the ban would be strictly enforced without exceptions. “Let me be clear—there will be no sacred cows. Any individual or filling station that violates this directive will face the full weight of the law. Security operatives have been instructed to act decisively,” Zulum said.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s determination to restore peace and stability across Borno and called on residents to support government efforts in the fight against insurgency.

The directive is one of several recent measures taken by the Borno State government to dismantle insurgent networks and reclaim territories still facing threats from Boko Haram and ISWAP elements.
