Iran Executes Man Convicted of Spying for Israel Amid Escalating Hostilities

Iran has executed a man it convicted of spying for Israel’s Mossad, as tensions between the two long-time rivals continue to intensify amid deadly cross-border attacks.

The judiciary announced on Monday that Esmaeil Fekri, arrested in 2023, was hanged after being found guilty of espionage and crimes classified under Iran’s penal code as “corruption on Earth” and “moharebeh” — a term that means waging war against God.

According to the judiciary’s official news outlet, Mizan Online, the execution followed the completion of all judicial proceedings and was upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court.

Just a day earlier, Iranian authorities reported the arrest of two individuals in Alborz province, west of Tehran, also suspected of ties to the Israeli intelligence agency. In a parallel development, Israeli officials revealed they had apprehended two of their own citizens for allegedly working with Iranian intelligence.

These developments come amid an ongoing wave of military confrontations between the two countries. On Friday, Israel launched a series of surprise strikes it claimed were targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites. The attacks reportedly left at least 224 people dead in Iran, including senior military officials, scientists, and civilians.

In retaliation, Iran fired a barrage of drones and missiles into Israeli territory, killing at least 24 people, based on the latest figures from the Israeli Prime Minister’s office.

Iran, which does not recognize the state of Israel, has consistently accused the Israeli government of orchestrating covert operations to sabotage its nuclear program and eliminate key scientific figures.

The recent escalation marks a significant flare-up in the shadow war that has played out between the two nations for decades.
