Police Warn Officers Against Lobbying for Special Promotions
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has cautioned its personnel against lobbying for special promotions, describing such actions as unethical and a violation of established procedures. The Force also urged the public to disregard misleading online reports suggesting that arbitrary promotions are being implemented within the system.
The warning followed what the police described as a growing trend of unofficial lobbying and requests directed at the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission (PSC), allegedly influenced by recent reports of accelerated promotions granted to certain officers.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that the recent promotion exercise was not arbitrary but the result of a structured reward system designed to recognize officers who had distinguished themselves in service.

“These accelerated promotions were given strictly to officers who met the standardized criteria, including exceptional performance, uncommon bravery, and professional excellence,” the statement said. “It is not a blanket or general promotion scheme.”
The Force expressed concern over what it termed false and misleading narratives pushed by some online platforms, warning that such reports were aimed at undermining the integrity of the police promotion process.
“The Nigeria Police Force firmly cautions the public to disregard such falsehoods. These reports are baseless and do not reflect the transparent and merit-driven nature of the NPF’s personnel management,” DCP Adejobi stated.
He further warned that any officer found lobbying for promotion through unofficial means would face strict disciplinary measures, adding that such behavior violates the principles of meritocracy and professionalism which the Force upholds.
Reiterating its commitment to fairness, the police emphasized that its promotion process is anchored on integrity, verifiable merit, and honourable service to the nation. Officers were urged to remain disciplined, dedicated, and professional in the discharge of their duties.
