A Hero Beyond Faith: CAN Pays Tribute Imam Who Saved 262 Christians in Plateau
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid glowing tribute to the late Chief Imam of Nghar Village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, Sheikh Abdullahi Abubakar, describing him as a powerful symbol of courage, compassion, and shared humanity for saving 262 Christians during a violent attack in 2018.
In a statement issued on Saturday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the Imam’s actions represented a rare display of moral bravery and selflessness at a time of grave danger, adding that his legacy would continue to inspire Nigerians across religious and ethnic divides.
“CAN pays glowing tribute to an extraordinary religious leader whose life and actions remain a profound testimony to courage, compassion, and our shared humanity,” Okoh said. “The late Imam Abdullahi Abubakar will forever be remembered for his rare moral bravery and selflessness. By choosing to protect innocent lives at great personal risk, he saved 262 Christians during a violent massacre in 2018, standing firmly on the side of humanity when it mattered most.”
PUNCH Online had earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the death of the cleric, who passed away at the age of 92. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, also mourned the late Imam, describing him as a true hero of humanity and a shining example of interfaith harmony.

CAN noted that the Imam’s courageous intervention went beyond saving lives, saying it strengthened interfaith relations and rekindled hope in a nation often challenged by religious and communal tensions.
“This singular act of heroism did more than save lives. It reinforced hope, strengthened interfaith harmony, and reminded our nation that peace is possible when conscience, love, and faith guide our actions,” the statement read. “In a world often divided by suspicion and hatred, the Imam stood as a bridge-builder and a living symbol of what true religion represents.”
The association recalled that in recognition of his exceptional service to humanity, Imam Abdullahi Abubakar was honoured during CAN’s Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021.
“While plaques may fade with time, his legacy will endure as a shining example for religious leaders, communities, and generations to come,” Okoh said.
CAN further called for sustained public recognition of the late Imam’s sacrifice, including continued engagement with his family and community, to ensure that his story remains a source of inspiration for unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence across the country.
“As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life well lived in service to God and humanity,” the statement added.
The association extended its heartfelt condolences to the Imam’s family, the people of Nghar Village, and all Nigerians who were touched by his remarkable example of selfless leadership and compassion.
