US Mission in Nigeria Mourns Late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, Plateau

The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed deep condolences over the passing of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as a fearless champion of religious tolerance and a symbol of peaceful coexistence across faith communities.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Monday, the US Mission said Imam Abdullahi passed away on January 15, noting that his life and work left an enduring legacy of humanity, courage, and interfaith harmony in Nigeria and beyond.

“Imam Abdullahi was a fearless advocate for religious tolerance and had a long history of outreach across religious communities,” the statement read.

The US Mission recalled the imam’s pivotal role during a violent crisis in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, in June 2018, when he reportedly saved the lives of hundreds of Christians who were under attack. His courageous intervention earned him international recognition from the United States Department of State.

In 2019, the Department of State formally honoured Imam Abdullahi with the International Religious Freedom Award in recognition of his extraordinary efforts to promote peace and protect vulnerable communities during the Plateau State violence.

The Mission noted that his actions exemplified the highest values of humanity and interfaith cooperation, adding that his life’s work remains a powerful example of how religious leaders can serve as bridges between divided communities.

“His humanity positively manifested interfaith coexistence and harmony, and we know his legacy of peace and acceptance will live on and continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike,” the statement added.

Imam Abdullahi was widely respected for his consistent engagement with leaders and followers of different faiths, advocating dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful resolution of conflicts in areas affected by religious and communal tensions.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria and the international community, with many describing his death as a significant loss to the cause of peacebuilding and religious freedom in the country.
