NOUN Appoints Ambrose Gowong as Head of New Media Unit
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has appointed a seasoned media professional, Mr. Ambrose B. Gowong, as the Head of its newly established New Media Unit, in a move aimed at strengthening the institution’s digital communication and visibility.
The appointment, approved by the Vice-Chancellor and conveyed in an internal memorandum dated March 13, 2026, places Gowong at the centre of the university’s strategic drive to enhance its engagement across digital and emerging media platforms.
In his new role, Gowong will oversee content development, brand positioning, media monitoring and intelligence, as well as digital archiving and documentation. The responsibilities are designed to ensure coherent, timely, and effective dissemination of information in an increasingly competitive academic environment.

He has also been designated as the official compere for the university’s social functions, leveraging his experience in public engagement and stage presentation. However, academic ceremonies will continue to be moderated by the Registrar in line with established institutional tradition.
Gowong brings to the position a blend of professional experience and academic qualifications. He holds a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Kaduna Polytechnic, a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from NOUN, and a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from the same institution. He also earned a Master’s degree in Development Communication from Kaduna State University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Mass Communication.
The establishment of the New Media Unit within the Office of the Vice-Chancellor reflects NOUN’s commitment to centralising and professionalising its communication processes, with a focus on enhancing institutional visibility and engagement.
Stakeholders across the university’s faculties, directorates, units, and study centres have been encouraged to collaborate with the new unit to ensure the effective delivery of its mandate.
Observers say Gowong’s appointment signals a strategic blend of professional expertise and academic depth, positioning NOUN to adapt more effectively to the evolving digital media landscape while strengthening its institutional voice.
