NYCN Condemns Plateau Killings, Urges Justice, Youth Restraint
The Interim Management Committee Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Buhari Ibrahim Shehu, has strongly condemned the recent attacks by suspected gunmen and the subsequent reprisal violence that claimed innocent lives in Unguwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
In a statement issued on Monday, Shehu described the incident as “barbaric, senseless, and unacceptable,” warning that the recurring cycle of violence in the area poses a serious threat to peace, unity, and national development.
He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries sustained by victims, extending condolences to affected families. The NYCN chairman stressed that no grievance can justify the killing of innocent citizens, particularly commuters going about their lawful activities.
“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate killings in Unguwan Rukuba. Such acts of violence, whether by unknown gunmen or through reprisal attacks, must be condemned in the strongest terms. Nigeria’s youths must not be instruments of destruction but agents of peace and progress,” he said.

Shehu called on security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice, noting that accountability is essential to preventing further attacks.
He also urged community leaders, religious figures, and other stakeholders in Plateau State to promote dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among residents.
The NYCN boss commended the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, for his swift response, including the imposition of a curfew and his visit to the affected community, describing the actions as timely measures that helped calm tensions and restore public confidence.
According to Shehu, the governor’s presence at the scene sent a strong message of empathy and leadership, reassuring residents and grieving families of government support.
He further appealed to youths in Plateau State and across the country to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
“We call on our fellow youths to remain calm and law-abiding. Retaliation only deepens the crisis and leads to more loss of innocent lives. Let us choose peace over violence and unity over division,” he added.
Shehu reaffirmed the commitment of the NYCN to collaborating with relevant authorities and organisations to promote peacebuilding initiatives and youth engagement in conflict resolution.
He added that the council stands in solidarity with the people of Plateau State and will continue to advocate measures that foster lasting peace and security across Nigeria.
