In a statement issued on Saturday, the Director Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, described the late senior officer as a distinguished soldier whose contributions to national security and military professionalism would remain indelible.
The military said Major General Abubakar served the nation with distinction in several strategic appointments, including as spokesperson for various military formations and as Director Defence Information, where he served as spokesman for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
According to the Defence Headquarters, the late retired general made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, professional military development and national unity throughout his years of service.

The Defence Headquarters disclosed that it had refrained from making public comments about his abduction due to ongoing rescue efforts by the military and other security agencies.
“The Defence Headquarters withheld public comment on his abduction in deference to ongoing rescue efforts by the Armed Forces of Nigeria and sister security agencies. Every operational resource was deployed in the hope of securing his safe return,” the statement added.
The military noted that the tragic loss had further strengthened its determination to dismantle terrorist networks and bring perpetrators of violent crimes to justice.
It stated that ongoing security operations had been intensified in response to a series of abductions across the country, including that of the retired general.
“This sad loss further strengthens the resolve of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. We will remain resolute in the discharge of our constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria and to protect all citizens,” Uba said.
The Defence Headquarters assured Nigerians that troops would sustain offensive operations until peace and security are restored and those behind acts of terrorism and criminality are held accountable.
