COVID 19: Benue Chief Frees 12 Prison Inmates

The Criminal Justice Committee, Benue State led by its chairman, the Chief Judge of Benue State,Hon Justice Aondover Ka’akar discharged six and granted bail to other six inmates of Otukpo Medium Security Custodial Centre(MSCC) after reviewing 30 cases of Awaiting Trial Inmates (ATM) on 30th April, 2020.

The jail delivery exercise, according to the chief Judge was to decongest the custodial centre in order for the inmates to maintain social distance among themselves now that covid-19 pandemic is ravaging the world.

He asked the freed inmates to go and sin no more; and make sure they obverse covid-19 preventive measures and they go into the society.

The Controller of Corrections, Benue State Command, Amaka Okorie Nwabia, in a vote of thanks, thanked the CJ Benue for releasing some inmates to go and sin no more and in keeping with his promise of coming to decongest the Centre.

Following the Presidential directives for the decongestion of Custodial Centres in order to curb the spread of COVID-19 amongst inmates, the Administration of Criminal Justice Committee headed by the Bauchi State Chief Judge, Justice Rabi T. Umar, has today released eight (8) Inmates in Bauchi Custodial Centre.

The State Chief Judge who alongside the State Director Public Prosecution(DPP), Chairman NBA, representative of Commissioner of Police, and other members of the committee in the State, visited the Bauchi Custodial Centre, reviewed cases of Awaiting trial persons who have spent 4 years and above without their cases being determined and subsequently released 8 deserving ones.

The State Chief Judge advised the released inmates to be of good behavior and shun crime as they go back to their various communities, stressing that the committee will soon visit other Custodial Centres in the State to Carry out similar exercise.
In his remarks, the Controller of Corrections Bauchi State Command, Suleiman T. Suleiman thanked the Chief Judge and other members of the Committee for the exercise noting that it will go along way in decongesting the Correctional facilities thereby reducing the risk of contracting the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the world.
