Adewole Urges Nigerians to Imbibe Exercise to reduce Non- Communicable Diseases
The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has called on Nigerians to imbibe the habit of physical exercise as one of the mechanism of addressing non -communicable diseases.
The Minister made this indication on Saturday, 6th April, 2019 in Abuja, during “Road Walk” to sensitized general public on the importance of physical exercise to the body system.
The road walk was organized by Federal Ministry of Health in partnership with World Health Organization (WHO), as part of the activities to mark the 2019 World Health Day. The Theme of the This year’s event is “Universal Health Coverage Everywhere, Every time”.
Prof. Adewole who was represented by the Head of Public Health Department, Doctor Evelyn Ngige said that sedentary life style as well as poor healthy living contribute to the increases of non- communicable diseases in Nigeria.
He urged Nigerian to spend little time on physical exercise and avoid consumption of alcohol and tobacco.
In her message, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti that the Universal Health Coverage entails providing access to essential quality care and protection from financial hardship to everyone, everywhere.

Dr. Moeti represented by Dr. Rex Mpazanje, the Head, Communicable and Non- Communicable Diseases, WHO Office Nigeria, said that UCH is the global health security that guarantee access to quality health care service to everyone, everywhere and at any time.
Dr. Moeti called on all countries to re-align their healthcare programmes and consider strategic shift to achieve Universal Health Coverage. “It is very important to re-assess essential services to ensure that they are design for everyone, everywhere, and also to introduce innovative approaches to deliver these services”. She further explained that the process of achieving Universal Health Coverage differed from one country to the other, hence WHO developed various framework of action to assist countries to select option that suits their context.
She called on the leadership of the African region to work with WHO toward achieving Universal Health Coverage.
