Aisha Buhari Flags Off DEPOWA Traumatic Centre’s Construction

The Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, on Tuesday, stated that Military personnel who are exposed to war-zones, wounded in action, incarcerated or manifest acute war reactions are at risk for developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD.

Mrs. Buhari made this known during the foundation-laying ceremony of the Armed Forces Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Centre in Abuja, to be built by Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association, DEPOWA.

She said: “For her husband to have failed elections three times, was a big challenge for her to manage. Even contesting for primary elections can also cause traumatic situations. You can imagine me managing him, without structure on the ground to ensure he returns in good health and total wellness”.

She lauded DEPOWA for inaugurating the project, describing it as timely as she surprised the audience that Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari’s will within 7 months build Centre.

In her welcome address, the President of DEPOWA, and wife of the Chief of Defence Staff, Barrister (Mrs) Vickie Irabor, urged the federal government to prioritize the mental health of military personnel in the country.

Chief host of the event, Gen. Leo Irabor, commended DEPOWA for PTSD Centre project, saying, “We are standing to support you for this initiative, knowing that you are our partners in the frontline.”
