After ICPC Opposes El‑Rufai’s Bail Variation, Court Grants Him Supervised Medical Access
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has disclosed fresh developments in the ongoing trial of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, over alleged corruption and money laundering offences before the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
In a statement signed by the Head of Media and Public Communications of the Commission, Mr. J. Okor Odey, the ICPC said proceedings resumed on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, before Justice Rilwan Aikawa following an application by El-Rufai seeking a variation of the bail conditions earlier granted by the court.
The anti-graft agency stated that it had filed a 10-count charge against El-Rufai and a co-defendant, Mr. Joel Adoga, bordering on alleged conversion and possession of proceeds of corruption, as well as money laundering offences contrary to the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and other relevant laws.
According to the Commission, both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were arraigned.
At an earlier sitting, the court admitted El-Rufai to bail in the sum of ₦200 million with two sureties in like sum, while the administrative bail earlier granted to the second defendant, Mr. Joel Adoga, was adopted by the court.

The ICPC explained that Wednesday’s proceedings focused primarily on El-Rufai’s motion seeking a review of the bail conditions.
The prosecution team was led by Dr. Agada Akogwu, while Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oluwole Olaniyan, represented the defence and adopted the motion for variation of bail terms. The prosecution, however, opposed the application through a counter-affidavit.
Following arguments from both parties, Justice Aikawa adjourned the matter to Thursday, May 7, 2026, for ruling on the application.
During the proceedings, defence counsel also appealed to the court to allow El-Rufai access to medical treatment for dental and eye-related care at designated hospitals in Abuja.
Ruling on the request, the court granted the application and directed the ICPC to convey the former governor, under strict supervision, to medical facilities of his choice, including Mile Dental Clinic and Skipper Eye-Q Hospital in Abuja, whenever necessary.
The court further ordered that El-Rufai must be returned to custody immediately after receiving treatment, stressing that all movements would remain under the strict supervision of the ICPC.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to complying with court orders while maintaining lawful custody of the defendant pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
“The ICPC reiterates its dedication to due process and assures the public that the prosecution of the case is being conducted diligently and in accordance with the law,” the statement added.
