Police Urge Restraint Over Reported Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians in S’Africa
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called on Nigerians to remain calm and refrain from any form of reprisal attack following reports of xenophobic violence against Nigerians in South Africa.
The Force said the Federal Government is actively engaging relevant authorities and stakeholders through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to address the situation and safeguard the interests of Nigerians both at home and abroad.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the NPF disclosed that security and intelligence agencies reviewed the developments during a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on May 18, 2026, under the chairmanship of the National Security Adviser. The meeting assessed the security implications of the reported attacks and considered appropriate response measures.
According to the police, there is no cause for alarm, assuring citizens that the government is closely monitoring the situation and working towards a peaceful resolution.
The Force, however, warned Nigerians against taking the law into their own hands by targeting South African nationals, businesses, diplomatic facilities, or other interests within the country.

“While concerns about attacks on Nigerians in South Africa are understandable, the public is strongly advised not to engage in reprisal attacks, violence, intimidation, destruction of property, hate speech, or any conduct capable of threatening public peace and national security,” the statement said.
The police emphasized that Nigeria remains a nation governed by the rule of law and that all persons lawfully residing in the country, regardless of nationality, are entitled to legal protection.
It added that any attempt to attack South African nationals, diplomatic missions, businesses, or other lawful interests in Nigeria would be treated as a criminal offence and prosecuted in accordance with existing laws.
The NPF also urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified, inflammatory, or inciting information, particularly on social media platforms, warning that such actions could heighten tensions, disrupt public order, and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
To forestall any security breach, the police said it has intensified collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies and strengthened surveillance around critical national assets, foreign missions, and other sensitive locations across the country.
The Force further assured residents that adequate security deployments have been made to prevent any breakdown of law and order, while reiterating its commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring the safety of all lawful residents in Nigeria.
