Military, Family Mourn as Late Gen. Rabe Is Laid to Rest in Katsina Amid Renewed Concerns Over Insecurity

The former Defence Spokesperson, retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, who died in captivity two weeks after being abducted by bandits, has been laid to rest in Katsina State.

The late senior military officer was buried on Saturday in accordance with Islamic rites, with family members, senior military officers, government officials, and residents in attendance. The ceremony was marked by grief and reflection as mourners paid tribute to a man widely respected for his service to the nation.

Major General Rabe and his wife were abducted on May 30, 2026, along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. While the retired officer later died in captivity, his wife is reportedly still being held by the kidnappers.

Qur’anic recitations accompanied the burial proceedings as friends, colleagues, and well-wishers reflected on his distinguished military career and contributions to national security.

Many mourners described his death as a tragic loss, noting the irony that a man who dedicated much of his life to defending the country ultimately fell victim to the insecurity he once fought against.

Residents across Katsina metropolis also expressed shock and sadness over the development, lamenting the persistent security challenges affecting communities across the country.

Speaking during the burial, Dr. Sama’ila Balarabe described the incident as a painful loss to both the family and the state.

“This is a painful loss, not just to the family but to the entire state. He served this country faithfully, yet he died in such circumstances,” he said.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Defence Headquarters described the late General Rabe as a dedicated and professional officer who made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations and national security efforts.

The military noted that his commitment to duty, patriotism, and the unity of Nigeria would remain a source of inspiration for personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Defence Headquarters also assured Nigerians that efforts were ongoing to track down those responsible for the abduction and death of the retired officer, as well as intensify operations aimed at dismantling terrorist and criminal networks across the country.

Meanwhile, the death of the retired General has continued to generate widespread reactions across the country, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the worsening security situation.

On social media, several commentators questioned the safety of ordinary citizens if a retired General could suffer such a fate, urging authorities to strengthen measures aimed at combating banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of violent crime.
