Nigeria, France Strengthen Defence Cooperation to Tackle Emerging Security Threats
Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with France following the successful conclusion of the Fifth Nigeria–France High Defence Staff Talks held at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
The two-day strategic meeting, which took place from June 29 to 30, focused on enhancing bilateral military collaboration through strategic dialogue, joint training, intelligence sharing, capacity building and other areas of mutual interest.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, at the closing ceremony, the Chief of Defence Training, Rear Admiral Abolade Ogunleye, described the talks as a significant platform for consolidating the longstanding strategic partnership between Nigeria and France.
Ogunleye, who conveyed the CDS’s appreciation to the French delegation for honouring Nigeria’s invitation, said the High Defence Staff Talks have remained a critical mechanism for deepening bilateral military cooperation and addressing shared security concerns.
According to him, General Oluyede noted that the enduring relationship between Nigeria and France reflects both countries’ shared commitment to promoting regional and global peace and security through sustained collaboration.

The CDS expressed confidence that the outcomes of the discussions would further strengthen professional ties between the armed forces of both countries while fostering lasting institutional relationships. He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to sustain and expand existing areas of defence cooperation with France, expressing optimism that the deliberations would advance mutual interests and defence collaboration.
Speaking on behalf of the French delegation, Lieutenant General Eric Peltier thanked the Armed Forces of Nigeria for hosting the meeting and reiterated France’s commitment to strengthening defence collaboration through continuous strategic dialogue aimed at addressing emerging regional security challenges.
Peltier described Nigeria as a leading African power with a critical role in promoting regional stability and security, noting that the country’s vast experience and deep understanding of the regional security environment remain invaluable in building a stronger and mutually beneficial defence partnership.
He added that the high-level engagement created opportunities for both countries to identify new areas of cooperation while reinforcing existing defence relations through closer interaction among relevant military institutions.
The French military chief expressed confidence that the discussions would produce tangible outcomes and serve as another milestone in the growing defence partnership between Nigeria and France.
