Prof Jerry Gana Unveils Vision for NIPR’s World-Class Public Relations University in Nigeria

At the inauguration of the Project Implementation committee tasked with establishing the Public Relations and Leadership University (PRLU) in Nigeria, former Information Minister Professor Jerry Ganaprovided a compelling vision focused on accessibility, academic excellence, and sustainable leadership for the anticipated institution.

The world-class institution, proposed by Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, (NIPR), will be the first-ever PR university in the world when it commences academic activities in 2026.

But PRNigeria reports that the NIPR will, in this month (September 2024), launch its “Public Relations Finishing School” in Nasarawa State.

During his address, Gana underscored the critical need for the university to be easily accessible through multiple transport routes, including highways, railways, and airways. He emphasized that the institution should occupy a prominent location in a picturesque setting, as per the agreement reached at the leadership forum.

He congratulated the project implementation committee on the formidable challenge of planning a world-class university and acknowledged the seriousness of their assignment, which aims to place the university on the global academic stage.

In terms of academic standards, Gana firmly stated that the university must uphold a zero-tolerance policy for mediocrity. He envisions the institution as a breeding ground for innovation, idea incubation, and impactful research. Attracting and retaining top-tier talent from around the globe is paramount, he asserted, cautioning that academic merit should supersede connections in faculty promotion.

The former minister also shared strategic insights for achieving high academic standards. He highlighted the dual importance of public relations and leadership in fostering a culture of excellence. Gana envisioned the university as a leader in public relations education, with a steadfast commitment to research and innovation woven into its mission.

Outlining key strategies integral to developing a world-class university, Gana stressed that top-notch faculty forms the foundation of academic excellence. He called for elevated benchmarks in teaching and research, alongside robust faculty development programs, to cultivate an innovative research culture.

Infrastructure and technological advancements were also focal points of Gana’s remarks. He stated that investing in superior teaching and research facilities is essential to avoid mediocrity. Embracing modern technology and innovation in education will be crucial, ensuring that both students and faculty are equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in an evolving academic landscape.

In closing, Gana addressed the importance of institutional sustainability and accountability, emphasizing robust governance and visionary leadership as cornerstones for long-term success. He reiterated that maintaining academic excellence hinges on strategic leadership that prioritizes the university’s reputation and longevity.

As the committee embarks on this ambitious project, Gana’s framework sets the stage for a transformative educational institution poised to make significant contributions on both national and international fronts.

In his address before inaugurating the committee members, President and Chairman, Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Dr. Ike Neliaku emphasized that public relations is essential for leadership, and leadership, in turn, enhances public relations.

“We believe that to be an effective public relations practitioner or communicator, you must possess leadership qualities. Leadership is both an art and a science, requiring research, just like public relations. So, you cannot separate leadership from communication, nor can you separate communication from leadership.

The composition of the PRLU Project Implementation Committee included Professor E. S. Dandaura Vice Chairman NIPR who is the Chairman and Alhaji Mohammed Dattijo as the secretary.
