Anambra Police Foil Alleged Plot to Sell Newborn, Reunite Mother, Child
The Anambra State Police Command has foiled an alleged attempt by a 21-year-old woman to sell her newborn baby and reunited both mother and child with their family for care and support.
The intervention was carried out by operatives attached to the Oyi Divisional Headquarters following credible intelligence received on June 19, 2026.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga
, officers acted on information provided by a concerned citizen and traced the young mother and her infant daughter to a location in Igbariam, where they were secured.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had concealed both her pregnancy and delivery from her parents. Police further discovered that she had left her family home in Imo State and taken refuge with a friend in Igbariam before the alleged plan was uncovered.

Following the operation, police authorities immediately contacted the woman’s parents, who responded promptly and arrived to take custody of both mother and child.
“The mother and child were reunited with the family to guarantee adequate care, supervision and emotional support while investigations continue,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the vigilance and sense of responsibility displayed by the complainant and other members of the public whose timely information contributed to the successful intervention.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting children from abuse, exploitation, trafficking and neglect, urging residents to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with credible and timely information.
The police spokesman said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
