Jail Breaks: NCoS Begins Harmonization of Inmates’ Biometrics

The Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, says it has evolved a good number of strategies to contain the spate of attacks on Custodial Centres and neutralize any threat to security.

The strategies, according to its spokesperson, Mr. Francis Enobore, include harmonization of inmates’ biometrics, and robust strategic engagements with sister security agencies for reinforcement.

Other measures the Service intends to deploy are making entreaties to government for increased budgetary provision and continuous recruitment of personnel, deployment of technology, improved staff welfare, and capacity building, together with infrastructure upgrade.

Enobore, spoke in Abuja at a media parley with journalists covering NCoS.

The Corrections spokesperson further noted that the unique brand of their Service that combines formal education and vocational skills acquisition to reform inmates has continued to yield outstanding results.

He said a total of 970 inmates are currently studying various courses at diploma, undergraduate, post graduate with 5 at PhD levels.

Enobore added that the activation of the Non-Custodial Measures has appreciably reduced influx of persons into Custodial Centres.

“From inception to date about 31,963 minor offenders have served their sentences through non-custodial measures thus reducing inmates’ population by that number.

“Another intervention is the Virtual court room system introduced to MSCC Kuje by the Federal Ministry of Justice to enhance speedy trial of suspects in custody,” he said.
