A Non-Governmental Organization, the Prisons Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), in collaboration with other stakeholders organized a workshop in Abuja to stem the tide of human rights abuse in the country.
The workshop is coming on the heels of public outcries on several violations and non-respect for human rights by security agencies and justice sector institutions while carrying out their constitutional duties.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Executive Director of PRAWA, Dr. Uju Agomoh spoke on the need to monitor and track ongoing human rights training and capacity building initiatives for security and justice sector institutions in Nigeria to bring down the rate of human rights violations.
She noted that the development has become imperative as results from the nationwide monitoring exercise would serve as a tool for assessing the effects of human rights trainings on police officers, prison staff and other justice sector institutions apart from determining whether such trainings have indeed resulted in behavioral changes.
The workshop had in attendance various stakeholders, including government officials , Human Rights Radio, Network for Police Reforms in Nigeria, Olive Justice Initiative, National Human Rights Commission and others.
