Ex-Info Minister to NIPR Members: Uphold Highest Professional Standards

Former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Prof. Jerry Gana, has urged members of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to be good ambassadors of the institute by consistently displaying high levels of integrity in their professional spaces.

Professor Gana made the call on Wednesday night at a dinner ceremony organized by the Institute in Abuja to celebrate members who have been newly appointed to various public offices in Nigeria.

Gana, a one-time former senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at Second Republic emphasized the importance of integrity beyond public service. “I want to urge members of the institute to embrace true integrity,” he stated.

“Integrity isn’t a single act towards Nigerians; it’s a constant commitment to ethical conduct in all aspects of your professional lives, regardless of who you’re working with or under.”

Gana highlighted the detrimental effects of negative PR practices like misinformation and manipulation, urging members to uphold the highest professional standards and fight against such harmful tactics.

He emphasized that maintaining a strong reputation for ethical conduct is crucial for the NIPR and its members to retain public trust and influence positive change in society.

His words, “I urge all members of this institute to be champions of integrity. It’s not just about a single good deed; it’s about demonstrating consistent ethical conduct throughout your life.

“This means extending your principles to all Nigerians, especially those less fortunate. True character shines in caring for the downtrodden, regardless of privilege. While some may overlook the underprivileged, your profession, talents, and gifts demand a higher standard. Remember, the support you offer today might be reciprocated tomorrow.

“As we approach the upcoming institute summit, let’s unify and dedicate ourselves to both the institute’s growth and the betterment of our nation. With integrity and compassionate action, we can build a brighter future for ourselves and every Nigerian.”

On his part, the President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Ike Neliaku, commended Prof. Gana for winning the support for the institute.

He said the Council is already taking concrete steps to reinforce ethical standards, including other specific initiatives such as revising the code of ethics, strengthening disciplinary procedures, or launching ethical training programs.

“We are also planning to erect a National Reputation Hub that will enhance our work and rediscover the very essence of our profession, with integrity as the guiding principle, driving every discussion and every decision”, he said.
