Kwara 2027: Saraki, PDP Rally Behind Kale Kawu for Showdown with APC’s Danladi
The political permutations ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State took a dramatic turn on Saturday as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) adopted Engr. Sulaiman Bolakale Kawu Agaka, popularly known as Kale Kawu, as its consensus governorship candidate.
Kawu’s emergence has now effectively set the stage for what political observers describe as an impending high-stakes showdown between the PDP-backed technocrat and the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Engr. Yakubu Danladi Salihu, who is widely projected as the preferred candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Politics Digest reports that the development has revived the familiar political rivalry between former Senate President and ex-Governor Bukola Saraki and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, with both camps now strategically positioning themselves for what may become one of the fiercest governorship contests in the state’s recent history.
While Kale Kawu enjoys the backing of Saraki and the PDP political structure, Danladi is believed to have secured the confidence and support of Governor AbdulRazaq and key figures within the APC establishment.
Announcing the PDP consensus arrangement after consultations with party stakeholders and aspirants, Saraki said the decision reflected the party’s unity and strategic preparations ahead of the election.
“I am pleased to announce that, after extensive consultations with stakeholders of the Kwara PDP and our leading gubernatorial aspirants, we have arrived at a consensus candidate to fly the flag of our great party in the forthcoming governorship election.
“That candidate is Engr. Kale Kawu,” Saraki declared.
The former Senate President also commended other aspirants who stepped down for the consensus arrangement, describing their decision as a sacrifice made in the collective interest of the party and the state.

“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the other aspirants who, in the supreme interest of our party and state, have graciously stepped down to support this consensus. It is this spirit of unity and selflessness that will carry us to victory,” he added.
Kawu, a renowned electrical engineer, retired federal director and philanthropist, enters the race with what analysts consider a formidable political and traditional profile.
The Daniyan of Ilorin is regarded as one of the most influential senior princes from the Ilorin Emirate and is believed to command significant traditional goodwill and political influence across Kwara Central and beyond.
His supporters argue that his technocratic background, philanthropic activities and perceived bridge-building capacity could strengthen the PDP’s chances of reclaiming power in the state.
However, his emergence is also expected to reignite debates over zoning and power rotation in Kwara politics.
Many stakeholders from Kwara North have consistently argued that the district deserves to produce the next governor in the spirit of equity and political balance, especially after years of agitation over perceived marginalisation.
That sentiment appears to favour Danladi, who hails from Kwara North and has steadily consolidated his influence within the APC since becoming Speaker of the State Assembly in 2019.
Danladi is widely credited with maintaining stable executive-legislative relations throughout Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration and sustaining internal cohesion within the Assembly during periods many analysts predicted political divisions.
His anticipated emergence as APC flagbearer is therefore viewed by political observers as a strategic effort by the ruling party to consolidate support in Kwara North, reward loyalty and sustain the political dominance of the AbdulRazaq camp beyond 2027.
With both camps now rallying around candidates backed by strong political structures and influential godfathers, analysts predict that the 2027 governorship election may become a defining battle for political supremacy in Kwara State.
Beyond the contest between the PDP and APC, the election is also expected to test the enduring influence of Bukola Saraki in Kwara politics against the growing consolidation of Governor AbdulRazaq and the APC political establishment across the state.
