Court Remands Sowore in Kuje Prison
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of publisher and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of an application seeking a stay of execution of an earlier order revoking his bail.
The trial judge, Justice Mohammed Umar, also dismissed an application filed by Sowore requesting that he withdraw from the case over allegations of bias.
In a brief ruling, Justice Umar directed that the defendant remain in custody pending the hearing and determination of a motion for stay of execution filed by his new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika.
The court subsequently adjourned proceedings until June 24, 2026, for the hearing of the application.

The latest development follows the court’s June 16 decision revoking Sowore’s bail and issuing a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear for the continuation of his trial. The court held that his absence was unjustified and granted the prosecution’s request for the revocation of his bail.
Sowore is currently facing charges instituted by the Department of State Services over allegations linked to social media publications. The court had earlier ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case, ordering the defendant to enter his defence.
At Monday’s proceedings, arguments centred on Sowore’s application seeking the judge’s recusal and a separate request for a stay of execution of the orders revoking his bail.
The matter was adjourned until June 24 for further proceedings.
