    ODF: UNICEF Certifies Gunduwa Community Open Defecation Free

    The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has certified Gundawa Community in Katsina State Open Defecation Free (ODF).

    The Kanwa of Katsina Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara made the disclosure when he received Executive Members of Gundawa Development Association in his palace in Kankara.

    Open defecation is the human practice of defecating outside in the open environment rather than into a toilet. The term “open defecation free” (ODF) is used to describe communities that have shifted to using a toilet instead of open defecation.

    The Gundawa Community was certified ODF free during the recently concluded verification exercise conducted by UNICEF.

    The traditional title holder, while congratulating the community for the feat urged other others to emulate Gundawa in sanitation and clean environment.

    He also appealed to the community to be law abiding and support government programs and policies for more developmental projects.

    Early in his remarks, the leader of delegation and spokesperson of Gundawa Development Association, Alhaji Amadu Mamman expressed the gratitude and appreciation of the community to the Katsina State Government for construction of Dayi-Gundawa-Wawal Kaza – Kankara Road.

    Amadu said: “We must commend the government for constructing the road which can now enable our farmers to transport their farm produce with ease to nearby markets. The government has also completed work of controlling gully erosion which has been threatening our community apart from construction of a new secondary school in the community through communal effort with the support of CSDP.”

    The communities also expressed satisfaction with the fatherly role played by the Kanwa of Katsina District Head of Ketare Alhaji Usman Bello KAnkara for galvanizing the socio economic activities of the community.

    He said the District head has facilitated the issuance of National identity card to all eligible people in the area and also organized computer training for the youth.

    Alhaji Amadu called on the Katsina State Government to dredged Gundawa earth dam which is the only source of water for Animals and irrigation purposes.
